Ivar was a Spotted Owl (Strix occidentalis), and the nephew of Lord Rathnik. He was originally a simple warrior, but after losing his foot, he discovered a passion for creating charts of winds. His passion led to the discovery of the River of Wind to the Middle Kingdoms.

A Guide Book to the Great Tree[]
Ivar was sent on a mission to help quell kraal activity in the Bay of Fangs, and many of the kraals agreed to leave peacefully until he ran into their hot-headed leader, Sitka. She tried to barter with them for their battle claws, but the Guardians refused. Two days later, they were ambushed, and Ivar's teammates, Johan and Lar, were slain. The kraals took his battle claws off his own talons so hastily they mutilated his starboard foot in the process, and he rushed home as quickly as he could. Due to lack of proper medicine at the time, the tree's healer, Vreta, had to amputate Ivar's foot.
Once healed, he retreated to his hollow, stuck in depression until Theo approached him with a prosthetic foot he crafted in his forge. Theo worked with Ivar to regain his strength and learn to adjust to flight with the metal foot, but Ivar finds it difficult to fly for prolonged periods of time with it. That is, until he discovered small wind patterns around the Great Tree that allowed him to fly for hours. Ivar made a map of these winds, eventually venturing further and further from the Great Tree in pursuit of mapping even more until he discovered the River of Wind. He told Theo that was is going to follow it in pursuit of knowledge, and that Theo made him feel whole again. Soon after leaving, Theo followed after him, discovering the Middle Kingdoms. It is unknown what happened to Ivar after this, and if he ever made it to the Middle Kingdoms.
Trivia[]
- In the original legends trilogy, Lord Rathnik is said to be a Whiskered Screech Owl. The guide book states Ivar to be his nephew, but he is a Spotted Owl. He could be an adopted nephew, or this could simply be an oversight.
