Soren's sister, Eglantine, is falling under the spell of a strange nightly dream. Then, just as Soren notices her trancelike state, Eglantine disappears, and the dreams become a deadly waking nightmare that puts the Great Tree of Ga'Hoole in terrible danger. Soren must lead the Chaw of Chaws to rescue his sister. Thus begins the next battle between the owls of Ga'Hoole and the evil Pure Ones, deep in the treacherous territory known as The Beaks, where a raging forest fire will prove the greatest danger to the rescuers - and their best hope for victory.

Eglantine had started to have strange dreams of her parents being alive, and in her dreams she recalled Soren and Twilight saying that they were dead. She denied that fact and was awakened by Primrose, Eglantine's hollowmate. Ginger, another hollowmate who actually used to be a Pure One, suggested that they let her sleep. Primrose was shocked by this fact, but Eglantine reassured her that she was having a good dream. This statement started to make Primrose worried for the well-being of her friend and she suspected that something was deeply amiss. Later Soren, Eglantine's older brother, noticed that Eglantine had been acting oddly. After noticing her trancelike state, Eglantine disappeared. Soren and the band had to rescue Eglantine from the dream's trance.

Thus the chaw of chaws headed to The Beaks, the place Elgantine would most likely have gone with the weather and wind. In the meantime Eglantine entered in the hollow at The Beaks where on some nights she thought there was her mother, and she woke up from the trance and realized that this Barn Owl wasn't her mother, but Nyra. So she was captured by the Pure Ones. Later when she ran off with Primrose, who was also taken prisoner in her own hollow, she also took away the Nyra's egg (the "Sacred Orb").

Then the two exited the hollow and were pursued, and Eglantine was forced to drop the egg to escape, although she had decided to protect it at the cost of her own life. Meanwhile the Guardians, stumbled in a battle against the Pure Ones, withdrew them into believing them that they were far outnumbered. When the Guardians returned to the Great Tree, they recived news about the fall of St. Aggie's under the Pure Ones, so the monarchs of the Tree, to prepare for possible conflict, sent the chaw of chaws in the Northern Kingdoms for recruit soldiers, get and learn how to handle the ice weapons, gain a copy of the book Fleckasia and Other Disorders of the Gizzard, and learn more about the flecks in the library of the Glauxian Brothers, and find the Kielian snake Hoke of Hock, the old worrior Moss, and the blacksmith Orf. At the end of the book Soren received Ezylryb's old battle claws, which would be useful in the Northern Kingdoms.
