Wortmore was a male Barn Owl, and a Pure One Lieutenant.

History[]

The Rescue[]

Wortmore is briefly mentioned as one of the owls with Kludd when the chaw of chaws and the small Pure One force fought in the rescue of Ezylryb. Yet in this battle it is said that he was a Sooty Owl, but in the rest of the books he is recognized as a Barn Owl or maybe it is another owl all together (though Soren was noted to recognize Wortmore from the Skirmish in the Devil's Triangle, it is quite possible that the Sooty Kludd referred to as Wortmore and the Barn Owl Soren recognized were indeed different individuals who both participated in the Skirmish).

The Siege []

Wortmore was sent to get the rogue smith of Silverveil to make the Pure Ones battle claws for the coming war with the Guardians. He let slip the details of the Pure Ones' troops over Cape Glaux when he apologized to the rogue smith for having to rough her up and that the Pure Guards alone would triple in size. He took part in the Battle of the Siege, but was killed by Slynella, a flying snake, when he was advancing on Soren with Nyra's help. He fell into the sea and supposedly drowned.

Controversy[]

The Hatchling[]

Wortmore is mentioned as having been sent with Uglamore to find a rogue smith for Kludd's Final Ceremony, eventually recruiting Gwyndor to the task. Later on, Wortmore, along with Dustytuft, Uglamore and Gwyndor was mentioned to have borne witness to Nyra's First Prey Ceremony, making their presence known only after the son of Kludd and Nyra had slain the mouse he had hunted, at which the three Pure Ones began to circle in the formation typical when owls welcomed a new hunter into their midst. This raises the question if he did die at the Battle of the Siege and took part in the rest of the War of the Pure Ones or if this is a completely different Wortmore mentioned.

Phillip also mentions that it was Wortmore, alongside another lieutenant named Stryker, who enlisted him and his father into Kludd's forces during a recruiting mission within the burnt remnants of a forest in Silverveil, offering homeless, disoriented, starving owls of the Tyto genus hollows stocked with moss and prey, as well as the chances to be pioneers of a new age, but claiming it was only Tytos (the alleged "favorites" of Glaux) that were worthy of joining such an elite union, otherwise the pure-blood of Tytos would be contaminated with that of owls not belonging to the Barn Owl family. The two officers, however, did not reveal the rigid social structure imposed on the Union, who permitted only certain kinds of owls to ascend to certain ranks. However, as Phillip's Father and he were recruited sometime before The Capture (during which the former died), the Wortmore that he spoke of then could have been the "original" Wortmore.

The Outcast[]

Wortmore was again mentioned to be alive, well and still with the Pure Ones by Flint, who states that he and his companions only needed to guard the cache of eggs they had snatched till Wortmore and Stryker arrived, likely to transfer them to the Canyonlands. Once more, this question's whether Wortmore did indeed perish during the Siege.

The Golden Tree []

The "original" Wortmore was later hinted by Stryker to have still been around in The Golden Tree without dying or defecting, for he, alongside Gebbles, Nyra, Spyke and Stryker, was noted by Stryker to be all that remained of the original Pure Ones.

Personality[]

Wortmore has been proven to be very dimwitted, as he couldn't seem to count when he spoke with the rogue smith of Silverveil. He had trouble calculating the numbers of the Pure Guard during the massing of soldiers. He was most likely an excellent fighter though as he was high ranking, a personal favorite to Kludd (accompanied him on many missions) and suggested to be the same size as Kludd as well because their battle claw sizes are the same.

Trivia[]

  • Lasky shows contradiction in her work as she mentions Wortmore falling into the sea/ocean when Slynella attacks him. He is later mentioned in The Hatchling to have been sent with Uglamore to find a rogue smith for Kludd's burial. This presents the theories that there was more than one Wortmore, or that he fell into the sea but didn't die.
